Finally, it is time for outdoor planter design ideas! This summer I am going to try some new plants that I have never worked with before. It is always a good idea to stick with your thrillers, fillers, and spillers designing with color and height in mind. You also need to pick plants that have the same sun and water requirements. That is one thing that I could probably use some help with. For this container design idea I am working with:
- Thriller: Ensete Maurelii ‘Red Banana’
- Filler: Plectranthus scutellarioides Coleus ‘Great Falls Yosemite’
- Filler: Portulaca Moss ‘Happy Hour Orange’
- Spiller: Ipomoea batatas Sweet Potato Vine ‘Little Blackie’
Full disclosure, I have grown sweet potato vine, but I chose it again because I wanted a dark spiller that balanced all the reds and yellows up top.
I knew I wanted to work with the banana plant for this outdoor planter design because of its amazing colors and stature. I love the idea of growing this banana plant and then transitioning it inside over winter. These light black containers will be easy to move in when the temperatures cool. On that same note, if we get a cold snap yet this spring, I can bring this planter into the garage and save my son loving plants.
